Information for patients that
maybe prone to experiencing Eczema, Acne, Psoriasis or
Rosacea. If you do not suffer from one of these skin
conditions you may also find it beneficial to read the
following advice as a means to improve your general
health.*
So that you have the best forward path into healing your
skin condition, please try to follow these guidelines as
best possible :
Diet
It is best to practice a detoxing vegetarian diet for four
weeks at the beginning of your treatment. Below is a list
of foods that are best avoided to heal your skin condition.
This list might seem quite extensive, but please remember
that it’s a detoxing diet that hopefully doesn’t have to be
forever.
As a general guide, please go for : porridge, brown rice
and green leafy vegetables. Please avoid : meats, sea food,
dairy, wheats and the nightshade family [ which are –
potato, tomatoes, eggplant, paprika and peppers ] and any
processed, greasy, spicy, sugary or fried foods. Remember
also to drink plenty of good quality water that’s not too
cold [ filtered or spring water and always above room
temperature if you can ].
After four weeks of this detoxing diet, one may add a small
amount of animal protein back into one's diet - noting the
percentage of one's diet consisting of animal protein
should not exceed 30% and to keep one's intake of red meat
to a minimum. If desired, one may also add small quantities
of the other foods on the list above, but it is best to
keep them to a minimum for as long as your skin is healing.
Please note one can sometimes find that at the onset of
this detoxing diet, as the body has more opportunity to
eliminate wastes, one's symptoms may temporarily worsen.
However, this is most normal in many cases and usually
leads to much better skin afterwards.
Meal Times & Quantity
As the digestive system is naturally most active at certain
times of the day, it is important to maintain a regular
routine of eating at these times so that one's food is
properly digested and metabolised. These times are :
Breakfast: 8:00 am
Lunch: 12:00 midday
Supper: 7:00 pm
It is also important to supply your digestive system with
the appropriate quantities of food that it is able to
digest at certain times of day. It is recommended that one
starts the day with a hearty breakfast, have a medium sized
lunch and then a smaller supper. It is not recommended to
snack between meals or eat within two hours before
sleeping.
Sleep
Your skin most actively regenerates during
your sleep, so it is essential to maintain a healthy amount
of sleep per night. It is also important to sleep at the
appropriate time, which is before 11pm.
Smoking
Smoking results in a much higher risk of developing
psoriasis and is seen to exacerbate psoriasis once the
disease has become apparent. It is essential to avoid
smoking in order to heal one's skin.
Alcohol
As alcohol is one of the primary factors in the
exacerbation of skin conditions, it is recommended that
alcohol consumption is eliminated so that you have the best
chance of recovery.
Stress
Stress is one of the most considerable
factors in healing your skin condition, please try to limit
the amount of stress you experience to as little as
possible.
Meditation
Regular meditation is a way to reduce
stress. There are many forms of meditation to choose from
and many ways in which to practice. As a general guide, if
you are new to the practice of meditation it is best to
find a reputable teacher of meditation to assist you in the
beginning.
Emotional Disturbances
Although a natural part of life from time to
time, it is important to be aware that emotional
disturbances can effect the condition of one's skin.
Water
The quality and the amount of the water you drink has a
direct relationship with the condition of your skin. It is
recommended that you drink the best quality water you can,
avoiding tap water due to the impurities and chemical
additives that it contains. One should aim to consume 1.5
to 2 litres of good quality water per day. It is also
recommended that the temperature of the water be not too
cold, so no iced drinks and try to ensure that the water is
at least room temperature.
Exercise
A healthy amount of exercise is essential for healthy skin,
so aim to be active at least for 30 minutes per day. Gentle
exercises such as walking and yoga are most suitable.
Exhaustive 'high-impact' exercise is best avoided.
Bathing
As the added chlorine in tap water is
sometimes known to irritate sensitive skin, bathing with
chlorinated water is best avoided if possible. One solution
is to filter the chlorine from the water you
use.
Stimulants
Tea, coffee and chocolate should be avoided.
Moisturising
It is important to only apply moisturising products that
nourish the skin and promote moisture balance. For this
reason it is best to only use moisturisers that are made
from natural ingredients and avoid such that are based on
petroleum ingredients.
Itching
If your skin condition is unavoidably itchy, try to itch
with a damp towel rather than the finger nails to protect
the skin surface from becoming broken. Another way to
relieve itching is to temporarily apply an ice pack to the
area.
Medications
Please note that some medications are known to cause skin
conditions. As a consideration towards healing your skin,
it is recommended that you check the list of side effects
of any medications you are taking. In all circumstances
consult your medical advisor before making any decisions
regarding medications.
